Print this page and keep it in your car, if you are involved in an accident use this check list to make sure you cover all your bases.

  1. Keep your car insurance company's claim and service card in your vehicle. If you do not have these documents, write your policy identification number and your insurance agent's information down and keep it with your vehicle registration.
  2. Remove your vehicle from the flow of traffic to avoid further damage and injury.
  3. Always call emergency vehicles, such as police patrol or 911. Report your side of the story to the police and remain at the accident site until all emergency vehicles have gone. Request a copy of the accident report for your insurance records.
  4. Write down as many details as possible. Be prepared to write down names of those involved along with address, names and addresses of witnesses as well as police officers.
  5. Take a picture of the accident scene.
  6. Do not admit fault. Even if you have no-fault insurance.
  7. Do not discuss the accident with anyone. Further discussion about the accident with others can sometimes make your personal recollection unclear.
  8. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. If you are involved in an accident, report it to your insurance agency immediately to avoid any questions about ineligibility of coverage.
  9. Cooperate with anyone investigating the accident. Always keep clean copies of any documents that you receive regarding the accident and make sure that your insurance agent receives copies as well.
